Goals from Richard Duffy and Shakeel Jones-Griffiths were enough to ensure Congleton secured all three points in what was a dominant display at the Cleric Stadium on Saturday.

This win was The Bears’ first league victory since their Boxing Day triumph away against Northwich Victoria.

Richard Duffy’s side flew out of the traps, breaking the deadlock within the opening minute. Dan Needham’s inviting corner met the head of Duffy who made no mistake in heading home from close range.

A goal that certainly dictated the rest of the match, Congleton asserted their dominance from start to finish as chances kept arising.

The host’s may have been scratching their heads at half time, wondering how they were only one goal ahead.

Jones-Griffiths and Tom Pope saw headers go fractions wide of the goal with Needham’s fierce effort whistling narrowly wide before the interval.

Chances kept coming after the break too, with Lewis Short seeing his effort denied acrobatically by Ciaran O’Loughlin.

Congleton doubled their lead just before the hour mark as Jones-Griffiths’ left footed strike arrowed into the bottom corner.

Duffy believed he had got his second and Congleton’s third as he saw his looping header cleared off the line before Tom Pope was flagged for offside after firing home from close range.

Richard Duffy: “A great day”

Speaking after the game, player-manager Richard Duffy was delighted with his side’s performance against Vauxhall Motors:

“I think we dominated large majority of the game and deservedly come away 2-0 winners, on another day it could’ve been three, four or five maybe.

“We made really good chances and their keeper pulled off some great saves. All in all a great day.

“We didn’t really give them many chances to build momentum in the game. The large majority of it, we played in their half.”
